Guided Tour: Modern Art Buildings

Modernism

, linked to the

Art Nouveau

and

Modern Style

in Europe, lived its "high point" in Catalonia between 1888 and 1911. During these years many rich industrialists contracted the most famous architects of the moment to build impressive mansions.

Many of the most representative of these buildings are located near Paseo de Gracia, which at the time was the avenue of reference for the Catalonian bourgeoisie. During this tour we will discover, amongst others:

The

Milà house

, knicknamed "

la Pedrera

", finalised in 1910, one of Gaudí’s most well-known works. Unfinished because of a disagreement on the final Project between the Milà family and Gaudí. "La Pedrera" is one of Gaudí’s Works that is included as a world heritage site by UNESCO.

The

Batlló house

, finalized in 1906, is one of Gaudí’s most impressive works and a Barcelona icon. The fantastic facade with its colors, forms and decorative elements made of stone and crystal, arouse varied interpretations. The Batlló house is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site since 2005.

The

Amatller house

is a neo-gothic mansion, built by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1900, commissioned by Antoni Amatller, a rich industrialist, who made his fortune in the chocolate industry.

The

Lleó Morera house

, a work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, finalized in 1905. These three prestigious buildings (the Batlló house, the Amatller house and the Lleó Morera house) make up what Barcelonians call the "disagreement block", because of their totally different architectural styles.

The

Tapies foundation

, was originally an Editorial house. Built in 1885 by Lluís Domènech i Montaner, in a brick and metal structure.

The

Catalonian Music Palace

, a work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner , considered to be one of the founding fathers of the modernist movement. The Catalonian Music Palace is also included on the list of UNESCO world heritage sites.
