Guided Tour: The Rambla and surroundings

The

Rambla

, before becoming the central artery of Barcelona, and becoming world famous, was only the bed of a stream that flowed before the walls of the city to the sea.
On one side stood the fortified city, and on the other, convents, hospices and markets that did not need the protection of the walls. In the 18th century, the wall was destroyed and the Rambla was born as a broad avenue, urbanized with trees and fountains.
In the nineteenth century, it reached the height of its splendor with the urbanization of the "Plaza Real" and the construction of the "Gran Teatro del Liceo", Barcelona's opera house.

Going down the Rambla and onto the side streets you will discover, amongst others:

The

oldest university

in Barcelona, built in 1863 by Elies Rogent.

The

Canaletas fountain

a landmark and meeting point for Barcelona.

The

Casa de la Caritat

, formerly a nursing home and orphanage, now home to the Center of Contemporary Culture of Barcelona.

Moja Palace

, a small neoclassical palace, built in 1774 for the Marquis of Moja.

Vireina Palace

, a baroque building, built in 1772, for the viceroy of Peru, Manuel Amat i Junyent.

The

Boquería market

, opened in 1840, the largest in Catalonia, with over 300 booths, selling local products and amazing exotic products.
