Guided Tour: Gaudí's masterpieces (Sagrada Familia & Park Güell)

Modernism

, linked to the Art Nouveau and

Modern Style

in Europe, lived its "high point" in Catalonia between 1888 and 1911. During these years many rich industrialists hired the most famous architects of the moment to build impressive mansions. The most famous of these architects was without a doubt,

Antonio Gaudí

(1852-1926), a genius, with an uncommonly keen sense of geometry and volumes that permitted him to conceive new construction techniques and make impressive buildings, many times with little planning, since he preferred making models. His unmeasured creativity, not only applied to architecture, but he also created the interior details for the buildings like the windows, mosaics, balconies and wrought iron details and even the furniture and doorknobs…

During this guided tour you will discover Gaudí’s two grandiose emblematic projects: the

Sagrada Familia cathedral

and the

Park Güell

. Despite the fact that they are incomplete, they are both listed as

UNESCO World Heritage site

.

The

Sagrada Familia

, an unfinished cathedral, is Gaudi's last work before his accidental death. This cathedral impressive for its size and design is a unique work of art that will take your breath away.

After discovering the façades details we will visit the interior and the museum which traces the history of the construction and Gaudi's working methodology, and presents numerous models and studies of complex architectural details.

In 1902,

Eusebio Güell

, Gaudi’s friend and sponsor, (a wealthy businessman and politician), bought a huge plot of land on the hills surrounding Barcelona to create a housing project.

The project for the

Park Güell

, was to build 60 villas scattered in a huge garden and with a breath-taking view of Barcelona and the sea. Between 1902 and 1910 the surrounding wall, accesses and utilities were built. The project destined to the wealthy bourgeoisie was a failure because they found this area too far from the town centre, and only two plots were sold. It is a pity because seeing the few buildings constructed, the entire project would have been unique and amazing.
